Sherborne Abbey Wedding Photography in the Winter

The Abbey at Sherborne in Dorset is a Grade I listed building, and a magnificent venue for a wedding. It sits in the market town near the River Yeo and there's been some form of place of worship there since AD 705. So it was always going to be an impressive building to use as a backdrop for Laura and Dan's winter wedding there last November.

Natural Documentary Wedding Photography

This Sherborne Abbey wedding began a few miles away at Holbrook House where I started my photography with Laura and her sister getting ready. Although the whole of the hotel was given over to their wedding party, and there were lots of the couples family and friends there when I arrived, it was only the Bride and her sister that were to be photographed there during their preparations. That's fairly unusual - it's normally busy with bridesmaids, parents, aunts, children, all bustling through the bridal suite. And that can add an element of excitement to the morning. But in this case, the quietness, and intimacy of Laura and her sister, enjoying some quality time before the ceremony, was a wonderfully tender thing to photograph. Like the moment above - a completely natural moment with Laura and her sister. I never arrange or set up pictures, preferring the documentary style of wedding photography.

Sherborne Abbey Wedding Ceremony

On to the Abbey for the wedding ceremony, where the guests were already waiting when I arrived, just before Laura and her parents. It was a beautiful ceremony, and the architecture gave me a lot to work with in my compositions. Though light in these kind of large buildings is always a challenge in the Winter, I was able to search out some little pockets of natural light and work with what was there. By the time we had finished the group photos it was dusk as we arrived at Holbrook House to begin the reception.

Fantastic work. I love your style. You've clearly got a great eye for capturing great moments and in a very artistic way.

What beautiful storytelling. Your black and whites are so rich, and compositions really capture the sense of place. I didn't just see - but felt my way through your photos. Brilliant wedding photography! Bravo
